August Favorites 2019

Books:

Usually I try and only put one book in my favorites each month just because I also do a wrap up post but there were three books that I loved so much that I really couldn’t choose. They’re also all from different genres so I might as well share them all!

You can check out my August wrap-up here, as well as my individual reviews for Graceling and The Right Swipe here and here.

Gus Johnson

Gus is my favorite YouTuber and has been for about a year now. He’s absolutely hilarious and is just so genuine and good. His Mitchell Robbins series is my go-to when I’m really sad, I physically cannot make it through one of those videos without crying from laughing so hard. With how stressed out I’ve been I’ve spent hours rewatching his videos and I can say I definitely didn’t regret that.

Make-Up/Skincare:

71LhyhfQ3TL._SX522_

I was shopping at Target with no list in mind, which is obviously never a good idea but it’s fine………….. Anyways, I was in the market for a new face mask so I decided to pick up this one. I am definitely still in the learning curve of mixing it (the clay comes in powder form so you have to mix it with water) but I was hooked the first time I used it. Honestly my skin had not been softer in months before trying it out. I was shocked! I’ve been trying to use face masks at least twice a week because I’ve been wearing makeup much more frequently and I’m glad I tried this one.

Also does anyone have any recommendations for good face masks? I’m looking for a nice peel off one for sure and maybe a good hydrating one.

Clothes/Accessories:

Fabletics leggings. Before I bought any from Fabletics I was obsessed with a pair that I have from Old Navy but they no longer sell the kind that I like so I had to move on to other brands to try and find replacements. The first few pairs I bought from Fabletics were patterned and I never wore them so I just figured I didn’t really like them… But then I bought solid colored ones and I’ve been wearing them constantly since then.

I definitely don’t like how hard it is to cancel a membership from the company once you’ve started one but I’ve just started setting calendar reminders on my phone to go skip my subscription charge each month.

Oh and along with the leggings I’ve gotten two tops and a bra and I really like those too! They fit nicely and are so comfortable!

Food/Drinks:

Chai tea ❤

This is my go-to warm drink from any coffee place and it’s been cold enough to order warm drinks again so I’ve been drinking a LOT of chai recently.

Pacific Chai is my favorite brand for instant chai mixes and I personally love the vanilla one.

Has tea been my favorite for like every single one of these posts? Whoops!

Other:

Poshmark

I’ve been using this for a few months now to slowly clear out my closet and earn a little money back. Unfortunately though, I’ve recently learned how nice this is to find pieces that I really want so most of the money I’ve earned has just gone to purchase other stuff off of here.

I found a really cute Halloween sweatshirt a couple weeks ago and I also got a jacket that I had seen in Old Navy last year that I loved but couldn’t splurge on at the time.

This solar powered lantern

61z6ijRGKYL._SL1024_.jpg

It is tiny but mighty!! I used it during my camping trip to Itasca and it was awesome! It is also pretty affordable too which is exactly what I was going for when I was looking for supplies.

That about sums up what I loved this past month! I read a lot of good books, drank a lot of tea, and listened to a lot of great music. What did you love in August?

May Favorites

Well, May has come and gone and we’re now well on our way to official summer. Now if only the weather would cooperate and then maybe I’d be a little excited. But all this rain we’ve been getting lately has just left me thinking good weather will never show up!

Anyways, here are some things that I loved this past month…

Books:

2019-05-25 044022345756352613296..jpg

Lilac Girls… I can’t say enough good things about this book. Here’s a link to the review I wrote. I may or may not also gush about this book in tomorrow’s post as well. I swear I’ll shut up about this at some point (actually I can’t promise that… sorry!!). This book was just absolutely amazing and I want everyone to read it. Heartbreaking and riveting and all based off of real people, it’s just crazy what horrors have happened on this earth.

Other Media:

Lizzo!!! I’d never listened to her music before this month and I have to say I was definitely missing out!

Truth Hurts and Juice are my favorites of hers so far and I listen to both of them at least once a day during my drive to work.

Make-up:

I honestly did not wear makeup enough this month to really compile anything good enough for this category. I did however start to work more on skincare stuff, I even started wearing sunscreen everyday (wow, go me!). Might do an in-depth makeup/skincare post sometime this summer though like I did a few years back in this post!

Clothing/Accessories:

Scrunchies

1969-12-31 0683717118541825058..jpg

I think that scrunchies are so cute and I love wearing them. I tend to wear them more as a bracelet because I usually already have my hair up when I grab them but I really love them as bracelets too.

Heeled sandals & Midi-Dresses

2019-05-29 087507996082912655994..jpg

These shoes are hard to wear at work but I do it anyways! I love wearing heels because they make me feel just a little extra bad-ass every day. And wearing them with longer dresses just makes everything feel a little bit more stretched out and I just think it’s a really nice look. I really enjoy wearing dresses during spring and summer because they’re an easy outfit to just throw together and you need so few pieces to look put together. And when I’m rolling out of bed 20 minutes before I need to be out the door the simpler outfits the better! I got both this dress and these shoes from Target!

Food/Drinks:

Starbucks mango dragonfruit refreshers with lemonade. I’ve also gotten my brothers into them as well. Now I’m really not a big fan of Starbucks most of the time but I had to try this drink and it was SO good. I’ve gotten two so far and I really would get it every day if I allowed myself to.

So that’s a few of the things that I loved in May. I hope to, for June, make a better post. Go a little bit more in depth and have more items on the list. But I guess I really didn’t do much in May and I really didn’t take enough pictures to add things to this list. I’ll try to do better next time and work on compiling stuff all month, working on the post as things come up 🙂

Anyways, what were some things you loved in May?

Spring Has Sprung

If anyone were to ask me what my favorite season is, my automatic answer is fall. However, I find positives in every season and could find ways to make any season my favorite (except winter, I’m sorry but though there are things that I love about winter I could never automatically say that that is my favorite season, too cold!!!!). Anyways, now that we’re inching closer to summer (though it doesn’t feel that way at all!) I’d like to share with you my favorite parts about spring.

Also all of the pictures in this post were taken when I went to a conservatory with my best friend back in January!

First off, something that I love about spring is that you can finally start ordering iced coffee again without seeming weird, I mean I’ve learned that I can order it year round and just not care what other people think about me but as someone with that extreme anxiety you better believe that I still care! I just really prefer ordering iced coffee when I go to coffee places so it’s nice when the weather warms up and I can freely drink iced coffee without freezing my hands off.

Another thing I love about spring is not having to worry about wearing enough layers and also thinking about the logistics of bringing/wearing a jacket everywhere I go. In the same strain, I also get so happy about pulling out the old knock-off Birkenstocks to wear again. And y’all can judge me right now but I am 100% one of those people that wears socks with my birks when it’s still slightly too cold to wear them sockless!

Back to the clothes though, my favorite outfits are warm and cozy ones… Sweaters and leggings are such an easy go-to that I wear all the time. I like spring because it’s still cool enough most days to wear my favorite outfits but I don’t have to wear a super bulky winter coat over the top of it. Fun fact though, I’ve had my winter coat since I was in 7th grade, it’s almost 10 years old now but it’s still going strong! I hate the hassle of piling on hats, scarves, gloves, boots, and a coat every single day. And having to wear bulky boots everywhere is so annoying! I love being warm and cozy but I also like not feeling like my feet are trapped.

It’s also fun to start bringing out the sundresses again. But that’s more of a fun summer thing because I feel like half the time spring just jumps straight to summer here. There’s no in between time where I can wear sundresses with cardigans, I just go from being too cold to wear dresses to boiling in my clothes so I need to wear only dresses.

Spring also brings with it the start of hiking season! As soon as the ice is gone on the trails I try to go hiking as much as possible! My goal in the next few years is to go on at least one hike at every single state park in Minnesota and I’ve already made decent headway on that goal. I actually have a camping trip planned for later this summer and I’d like to try and plan at least one more if not two but I’ll have to see what plans I end up having for the summer.

Back to hiking in spring though. Hiking in spring is so nice because there are no bugs! Even if it’s a bit chilly it’s so easy to just add an extra layer or two and just keep moving to stay warm. The fact that mosquitoes aren’t eating me alive and I’m not breathing in gnats is so great. I don’t even care when I cover my boots in mud, no bugs makes up for it all!

The last thing that I really love about spring is that the days are finally getting longer. The extended sunshine makes it so much easier to have motivation to do stuff. Unfortunately my work schedule right now makes it so hard to make myself go to bed on time because I just want to enjoy a full day but I digress. I think this summer will involved a lot of me just being too exhausted to function at work because I’m going to stay up way past my bedtime to enjoy the final bits of sunshine every day. I also really love having rainy days instead of snowy ones! However, now that I drive I really hate having to drive in the rain! But rainy days are still my favorite nonetheless.

Just seeing the world start to turn green again every year instantly helps me start to shake away my winter blues. Every single day the trees outside get a little bit more green and it makes me so excited to start seeing so much green again. And it makes me even more excited to start seeing flowers too! The grocery stores around here have started setting up their outdoor plant sections and I love it! Bring on the plants!

So these are just a few of the things that I love about spring. It’s a season that brings about change and rain and sunshine and green. It makes me so happy and even though what comes next is the boiling heat of summer I still like spring!

What’s your favorite season? What parts of spring do you like best? What do you like the least?

Hope you all have a good day!

18 Things I Wish I Would Have Known In 2018

2018 was possibly the worst year of my life for loads of reasons. Yes, I had a ton of good experiences overall but in the end, things just turned to shit!! So here are the 18 things I wish I would have known right off the bat at the beginning of the year.

  1. If someone doesn’t like you, don’t waste your energy trying to make them like you.
  2. Money is the root of all evil… SAVE SAVE SAVE!
  3. Sometimes the people who say they will never leave you, will leave you, and you have to learn to accept it even if it is really hard.
  4. Moving home isn’t a bad thing
  5. School can wait, your mental and physical well-being can’t
  6. Food is not the enemy, sometimes other things can make you gain weight too
  7. You don’t have to have found “the one” by 22
  8. Birthdays aren’t special, don’t stress
  9. Your best friend should always be there for you and if they give up on you, they weren’t your best friend after all.
  10. Do NOT change yourself for anyone but yourself
  11. Sometimes your coworkers will hate you and they will lie about you and hurt you. Always be the bigger person.
  12. Memories can hurt, but don’t get caught up in wishing the past was the present. You can’t change where you are.
  13. Not everyone is out to get you, but at the same time sometimes the people who say they’ll help you turn out to be the worst people in the end.
  14. Pets don’t live forever and sometimes you lose them way sooner than they were supposed to go. Cherish the time you have with your furry babies.
  15. People will be successful, you might not be. Don’t compare your life to others just because you’re on a different path and in a different season of life.
  16. The people who you think should be hurt by karma won’t be, they might never be. Realize that and move on. You can’t ruminate on how many different ways you could ruin their lives if you were karma. It’s a waste of your time.
  17. Sea glass hunting and milkshakes and a trip to Gooseberry Falls will always be worth your time.
  18. Don’t let your fear of the future let you make drastic decisions.

I hope even one of these points can hit home with one of you reading. I have a lot ahead of me this year and even though I’m really scared of everything, I’m also really excited about life again. I can’t wait to share more with you.

Sincerely, Amelia

P.S. I definitely purposefully scheduled this post to go up on the 18th. Look at all those 18’s haha!

New Year, New Me?

So, it’s been a long time since I’ve even touched this website. For a while I honestly thought that I was done blogging for good. Sometimes I still feel like I should give up on this blog completely and delete it. I’ve actually started getting rid of all of my social media and it’s been wonderful!

But then I remembered how much I actually enjoyed writing for this blog, how excited I got coming up with new content, and how it helped to add structure to a chaotic life that I honestly wish was still my life.

A LOT has changed since the last time I talked to you and while I know I will update you on some things, most of my life will be staying private, it’s been a whirlwind to say the least.

Now, that it’s quite a bit into the new year I figured I’d share with you five ways that I’m going to try and make this a really good year!

1.I’m going to get back into reading. Beginning next week I’ll have a half hour commute to and from work and while I know I’ll be listening to music most days (especially in the morning to get myself pumped up) in the afternoon I think I’ll listen to audiobooks. I recently tried Audible and really enjoyed it! Though I can’t afford the full subscription yet, I hope to be able to soon because I have yet to have the concentration to be able to sit down and read a physical book. I’d really like to power through all of Jen Sincero’s books because I have heard nothing but good things about them. I’ll be starting with You Are a Badass and then go from there.

2. The next thing that I’m going to try and work on is drinking more water and cutting out the soda. Granted my caffeine addiction is far from gone (I found out I can make really great iced coffee at home and I’m completely hooked. I will be sharing how I make my iced coffee in an upcoming post.) I think the first thing I need to do is get a new water bottle. For some reason those always make me more motivated to drink more water. I really want a HydroFlask but I might have to just stick to my trusty Nalgene bottle that I’ve had for years.

3. I really want to start exercising as well. I had a really good habit of going to my apartment gym for a while but then I got sick and a bunch of other stuff happened and now I’m back living at home and don’t have access to a gym. I think I’ll try to start doing yoga and weights in my room before work and then as soon as the weather gets nice I’ll be hiking as many weekends as I possibly can! My goal for a few years now has been to hit up every state park in Minnesota and I really want to get going on that goal.

4. I’d like to keep journaling. I started that pretty early on this year and have done really well with keeping my journal updated. I think I’m going to make another post soon on journaling again and talk more about how I journal now and also how I read and annotate self help books.

5. I want to develop and maintain a self care routine. At least once a week I want to pamper myself and pretend that I actually like it. I also want to have enough money to do things like possibly get my nails done or go get a massage if I had a really bad week. But first I’ll start off with face masks and not so healthy food. (This carbonated mask is still my absolute favorite when I want to have fun… I also reeeeeaaaally want to try the Hell Pore mask.)

So overall these are the things that I want to try at the beginning of this year to better myself. And included in all of this is a continuance of blogging. I’d really like to try and post once a week, if not more. I’m not going to try and force myself to stick to a schedule because I have sooooo much that’s going to be going on but I’ll start with posting once a week and going from there.

I’m really excited to be back y’all! Hope you’re ready for spending a great year with me!

Sincerely,

Amelia

P.s. I joined the Amazon Affiliate program so the links in this are from that. I promise I won’t share anything I know isn’t good.

Makeup Favorites

Today I’m here with a post that I’ve been planning on making for a little over a year now but I just haven’t gotten around to writing it. (Or more like I haven’t wanted to take the pictures that go with all the writing).

So here are some of my favorite makeup items! I’ll split them up into different categories and give you the details on each item.

Face items:

NYX Dewy Finish Setting Spray

So I guess I’m starting off with what is actually the last item I use when doing my makeup. This is the first setting spray I’ve ever purchased and I honestly don’t think I will ever be switching it up. My makeup used to melt off my face by the end of the day and with this it all stays in place which I love because it means I can wear makeup everyday and not worry about sweating it all off!

Tarte Cheek Stain in Dazed

This is one of the only blushes that I use. I find it hard to use blush because my skin is relatively pale so I feel like even when I’m using a minuscule amount of product I still end up looking like a clown. Dazed actually blends out to look really natural and it also smells like Fruity Pebbles which I find to be a really awesome bonus.

ColourPop Sculpting Stick in Dove and Pixi Beauty Bronzer in Summertime

These are my go-to products for bronzing and contouring. I use Dove primarily in the winter when I’m paler and Summertime in the summer when I have more of a tan. They both work really well with pale skin which I really appreciate. I definitely like how well Summertime works with my skin tone because most bronzers I’ve owned in the past end up being way too orange in tone and look garish on my face no matter how tan I get. So I’ve pared down my collection to just these two products for bronzing and contouring and I’m really happy with both of them.

Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-hour Blush in Enthused

So even though this is described as a blush I use it as a highlight because of how sparkly it is. I bought this on a whim during some sort of holiday sale at Sephora and I didn’t even touch it for months after purchasing it. Then I started getting back into makeup and using highlighter and I picked this up to try and realized just how awesome it is!

Eye Items:

bareMinerals Brow Color in Dark Blonde/Medium Brown

This is the only eyebrow product I own and I love it! It’s really easy to apply and looks so natural.

Pacifica Eyeshadow in Ethereal:

So the more that I think about it, the more that I wonder if this is actually supposed to be a highlighter. I use it as an eyeshadow but I honestly think that I might start using it as a highlighter because it really pops.

The Balm’s Nude Dude Volume 2:

I’ve had this palette for a few years now and I love it more every time I use it. The colors are flawless and there’s little to no fallout which is awesome!

Tarte’s Tartelette in Bloom:

I got this for Christmas and has been my most used palette since December (although I will admit it hasn’t gotten a ton of use because I haven’t been wearing makeup as much as I used to). It does have a decent amount of powder kick up but I still really enjoy the colors. It is also pretty lightly pigmented compared to other eyeshadows that I use but it helps for those days when I don’t want a super bold eyeshadow look.

Lip Items:

ColourPop Lippies

The price and formula of these are amazing! $5 for lipsticks and $6 for liquid lipsticks, heck yeah! I have a giant stash of these and whenever I want to try a new color I go with ColourPop because I know that I’m going to get good quality for cheap so even if the color isn’t what I’m looking for I didn’t spend a fortune on it.

Some items that I love that aren’t pictured here include IT Cosmetics Superhero mascara (it is incredibly pricey but my absolute favorite). I’m using an ELF mascara right now which I enjoy but it takes about three layers before my eyelashes get anywhere near the level they are at with the Superhero mascara. I also really enjoy Kat Von D’s Tattoo eyeliner but again, using an ELF eyeliner which just doesn’t quite measure up but is way more affordable. Gotta love being a broke college student with no summer job.

On a side note, I didn’t do any swatches of my eyeshadow palettes or lipsticks because I was thinking of doing separate posts on just those items if anyone is interested in that.

So these are my favorite makeup items! What are your go-to makeup items? Also don’t forget to leave a comment below if you want me to write a more in depth post about any of my eyeshadow palettes or my collection of ColourPop lip products.

Have a great week everyone!

Pokemon and Mental Health

I’m pretty sure that if I sat down with my past self right now and told her that Pokemon would be a huge part in helping with our mental health, I’m pretty sure that I would have laughed in my own face. I was definitely that kid in elementary school that made fun of the “nerds” who played Pokemon. Which is pretty ironic considering I am and literally always have been a giant nerd.

Back in July, when Pokemon Go swept through the United States I decided to give it a shot. My boyfriend taught me how to play it and it took me less than half an hour to realize how much I loved this game. The more I played it, the more confident I felt in walking around by myself, and more often than not I actually looked forward to leaving the house. I started to feel more comfortable about leaving the house with no makeup on, or with a full face of makeup. Slowly but surely I began to care less and less what people around me thought about me because I am so excited to go out and try and catch new Pokemon.

unspecified-2

This is a screenshot from very soon after I began playing the game, I was very proud of my small collection of Pokemon.

So even though now that the game has slowed down I still play it. I feel as if it gives me a sense of purpose in some small way. It makes me feel like I have a reason to go outside and it gives me something to enjoy my time. It’s odd how much an app could change me, but it made me want to get outside and get walking. I love being outside but I would always feel self-conscious so this was a big change for me.

Coping with mental illness is difficult, and it can be incredibly time consuming to figure out something that even comes remotely close to working. People can suggest lists and lists of things and some things may work while other times nothing will work. Things can work for a short amount of time and things can work forever. I find that for me, things work for very short amounts of time, or I trick myself into thinking that they work and then they stop.

I just know that coping with mental illness feels almost impossible most of the time and sometimes it definitely feels better to just sleep all the time and not do anything, but it’s always great to have a brief reprise when you can actually find something that seems to help.

unspecified

So my favorite Pokemon is by far Eevee. She’s absolutely adorable and if I could have one as a pet I would totally want one. I was so excited when I caught the first one, it made me so happy!

Do any of you out there still play Pokemon Go? What’s your favorite Pokemon?

I hope you all have an amazing night and remember that whatever you use to cope is good, don’t let anyone look down upon you for trying to make positive changes in your life.

August Favorites

Now that August is almost over, I figured I would share some things that I have been enjoying this month!

Perfume
Jorel Parker Perfume – Classico

I got this perfume in my July Ipsy bag (Ipsy is a subscription service that sends you a bag filled with beauty samples every month for $10.) I’m usually pretty hesitant with perfumes because a lot of artificial scents give me headaches. This perfume, however, has a very fresh and clean scent with some floral tones too. I love how it smells and it lasts super long too!

Necklace
Mischief Managed Necklace

My birthday was on the thirteenth of this month and my sister got me this necklace for a present. I love the Harry Potter series and this necklace is so cute. I don’t wear necklaces very often but it’s been fun incorporating this into my style.

Sexy Hair Product
Sexy Hair Heat Protectant

I went from about May until the end of July without straightening my hair. At the beginning of August the humidity started getting bad and my hair was getting really frizzy so I decided to start straightening it again. I hadn’t used a heat protectant before because they always left my hair looking and feeling very oily but I had this sample size one so I figured I’d use it and I ended up loving it! It smells really good and it makes my hair feel super soft after it’s been straightened. Definitely thinking about buying the full size version.

Batiste Dry Shampoo
Batiste Dry Shampoo – Tropical

I’ve seen so many people rave about Batiste dry shampoo that I finally had to pick some up to try. This tropical scent smells like coconut and works better than any other dry shampoo I’ve used so far. To me it was definitely worth the hype.

Twenties Girl
Twenties Girl – Sophie Kinsella

I picked up a few of Sophie Kinsella’s books from the library and I’ve flown through them! They’re so easy to read and have such interesting plots that I find myself loving every second of them. So far I’ve read three of her books and am starting on my fourth.

Contigo Water Cup
Contigo Water Tumbler

Not only do I have a love for coffee mugs, I also love water bottles just as much. I like this cup because it’s insulated and holds 20 oz. of water. It also has this awesome feature where when you take the straw out it creates a leak-proof seal so you can put drink mixes in it, or iced coffee, etc. and shake it to mix without worrying about spills. Definitely a new favorite water bottle for me.

Stabilo Pens
Stabilo Pens

I bought these pens to use when color coding my planner. They come in so many different colors and don’t bleed through paper and they’re not rounded so when you set them down they don’t roll away.

Nude Dude Eyeshadow
Nude Dude Eyeshadow Palette – The Balm

Bought this palette months ago but only used one or two colors out of it but finally picked it up this month to use more of a variety. The colors are very pigmented are so easy to apply. I’d have to say my favorite color is Fit, it’s such a nice gold tone and I love applying it all over and just wearing it on it’s own. Getting so much use out of this, it’s been great.

Birks
Mossimo “Birkenstocks”

My last item is my “Birkenstocks” that I got at Target! I really wanted to get a pair like this before I went on my spring break trip in March. I found these for $25 at Target and have worn them almost every day since! Now that summer is winding down I know I’ll have to put these away soon so I’ve been wearing them all the time. They’re so comfortable and I’m so glad I bought them.

So these are just a few of the things that I have loved using this past month! What have you all been loving?

Hope you all have a great weekend!
