On Saturday I’m moving into my dorm at CSS and officially starting life as a college student. I’m really excited about it but also very nervous. I’ve never been away from home for more than two weeks and I’m definitely looking forward to the challenge of being independent and just to college life in general.
With this upcoming change I’ve been turning to the Bible a lot more for advice and I continually come back to one particular verse. Back in November of last year, some friends of mine picked it to be our central verse for a weekend church retreat. It definitely stood out to me and has come to be a favorite verse of mine.
Joshua 1:9 says:
Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.
I’m a very shy and nervous person in general and it’s often hard for me to act the way I want to in new situations. If any of you have read the book Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell you’ll understand what I mean when I say I’ve convinced myself I’ll end up like Cath. (If you haven’t read it, Cath, the main character, is a freshman in college and is incredibly shy and won’t find the dining hall and basically just hides out in her room all the time.) Now I don’t think I’ll be that extreme but having to put myself in new situations, meet new people, and develop a new routine really scares me. I’ve spent a lot of my time in the past two years trying my hardest to step out of my comfort zone every chance I could but it’s still a huge challenge for me.
As a personal goal of mine I’ve decided to use this verse as a motto and use it whenever I need encouragement. God will be with me in every aspect and He will help to guide me when I need it. There’s no reason for us to dwell on what has happened and use it as a hindrance to our futures. This is something that I need constant reminding of. We should be brave in all aspects of our lives and not be discouraged when things don’t go the way we plan them to.
I want to share this video for the song Brave by Moriah Peters. Her music is so upbeat and motivating and always has such a great message. Some of my favorite lines from the song are:
“The worry is weighing on me, would you help me break down all these question marks and make me brave.”
I’ve definitely found a lot of peace in this verse and this song lately knowing that no matter what I have to do, God will be with me and there is no reason to be afraid of discouraged.
Have a great week everyone.
Oh, and here’s the video:
