Adventure Duluth: Bentleyville

For those of you who don’t know, Bentleyville is a “tour of lights” that takes place annually during the holiday season in Duluth. It’s 20 acres of over four million Christmas lights that you can walk through.

Here are the pictures I took…

I would highly recommend checking out Bentleyville if you’re near Duluth in December. Definitely worth the trip, and it’s free which is awesome too.

Bentleyville is done for this holiday season but next year you should all brave the cold temperatures and spend a night walking around.

Hope you all had a good day.

About Me

Hello, 2016!

Looking back at my horrible attempt at Blogmas I realize that I really shouldn’t have tried to take that on. But hey!, At least I got some posts on here after many weeks of being absent!

Now that we’ve made it to 2016 I’m not saying it’s going to be a resolution of mine to write a certain amount of blog posts each week or even each month. Instead, I want to focus on making blog posts that I am proud of. I want to start taking pictures again and really making content that I look back on and know that I put my all into it.

I’d like to spend some time over my winter break working on posts and taking the time to work on this blog and put the effort into it that it deserves.

I hope you all had wonderful holiday celebrations and a happy new year. I’ll talk to you soon.

‘Tis the Season

After my serious post regarding finals yesterday I figured I would lighten the mood today and share with you some of the pictures of my dorm room after me and my roommates decorated it last week.

We started off by saying we were going to decorate our door, and then it went from there. We were going to do more than what we actually did but we all ended up getting bored and decided to watch Christmas movies on ABC Family instead.

There’s our snowman!

I actually ended up making all of the snowflakes that we used to decorate except for one. I just kept finding new patterns on Pinterest that I wanted to try out and I got slightly addicted to snowflake making.

Here’s the snowflakes on our window.

The sunrise that morning was so beautiful and I thought it looked really cool through this snowflake. #art

The last part of our decorating night was the fireplace that we made.

Isn’t it adorable?

This was such a fun night. It made preparing for the last few weeks of the semester just a little bit better and I have to admit, our fireplace makes our room so much more homey than it was before. We’ve basically decided we’re keeping this up until Valentine’s Day!

Well, I should probably get back to the mountain of homework that I have left to do for tonight. Can’t wait for this semester to be over with! Only 12 more days!

I’ll be back tomorrow with my second Harry Potter quotes post.

Hope you all had a nice day.

Surviving Finals

Take a deep breath everyone… Smell that? That’s right! It’s the smell of fear and desperation as finals week looms in our near future.

This is my first time experiencing the joy that is college finals so I thought I’d share some of the things that I’m doing to get ready for them. I will admit though, that I have it pretty easy this semester and I’m really thankful for that. I only have two tests that I have to prepare for and only one of those tests is actually during our scheduled finals time. I do have a bunch of projects and papers and final assignments on the other hand so my advice is going to be geared more towards those.

So, without further ado, here’s how I’m surviving finals.Processed with VSCOcam with t1 preset

1 My finals are split up with one on a Friday and then the rest on Monday and Tuesday the next week. If any of the rest of you have a similar schedule I really recommend using the weekend. Spend that extra time you have to prepare for other tests or projects and save the parties or Netflix for Tuesday night.

2 Set a timer for 30 minutes and spend it working without any distractions. Then when those 30 minutes are finished, spend 5 minutes doing something else (like cleaning, going to the bathroom, packing, reading a nonacademic book, or watching some tv, Netflix, or YouTube). I started using this method right before Thanksgiving break when I had a lot of stuff that I needed to get done and I found that it does wonder for your concentration and work.

3 If your professors give things out ahead of time, get them done! I can’t even say this enough. A lot of my professors gave out assignments and projects and tests out way ahead of time and even though they aren’t due for  few weeks I’m already setting aside some time to work on them so that I won’t have to scramble and stress about them once it comes time to turn them in.

4 If you have extra time between classes, spend it studying. I know it’s so tempting to pick up your phone and spend that time in between your classes playing a game, or checking Instagram, but really, pick up your notes and study. I’ve been doing this for the past week and I really think it’s going to help me out.

5 Make a study guide! I know that opening up my notebooks or textbook and trying to study all that information can be extremely overwhelming so I decided to make study guides for some of my tests. Yesterday I made a study guide for my communications final and ended up summing up an entire textbook and all of my notes into 10 pages. I used the tests that my professor had given us over the course of the semester and used that to find the information that would most likely be on the final and expanded that into what I already had in my notes and what was in the textbook. It’s still a lot of information but it’s a lot less overwhelming than it had originally been.

6 Sleep. I know that a lot of you might be staying up really late to try and get everything that you need to get done done but try and get at least 7 hours of sleep a night if you can. Sleep is so important for you and trust me, your brain, grades, and immune system will all thank you for the sleep.

7 Lastly, make a countdown. Right now I only have 13 days left of my semester and I’m so excited. Knowing that the end of my first semester is getting closer is motivating me to finish my classes strong and power through to the end of finals.

I just want to end this post by wishing all of you fellow students good luck with your finals. I believe in you guys!

Have a great day everyone

A Christmas Craft

When I went home for Thanksgiving Break my siblings and I made a present for my mom and I thought I’d share it with you.

(Honestly, I’m just sharing this with you because I felt like taking artsy pictures of the paint plate!)

Processed with VSCOcam with a5 preset

We were originally going to end the project here, but then we started coming up with more and more ideas, and it spiraled out of control.

Processed with VSCOcam with a5 preset

We broke out all the paint I had… And then came the glitter.

And there’s the finished product! My siblings and I love making presents like this. We also made reindeer pajama shirts which I might share a picture of later in the month if I remember.

I hope you all had a nice day. I’ll talk to you guys tomorrow.

Adventure Duluth: Fitgers, Malts, and the Lake Walk

Quite early on in the school year, one of my youth group leaders surprised me one Saturday and took me out to lunch with one of her friends. They were going to the hot air balloon festival and Dianna figured she might as well treat me to some real food while she was at it.

We went to Fitger’s and I ordered a bacon cheeseburger (my staple at most restaurants) and a root beer. Dianna’s friend ordered a beer and the waiter asked to see her ID which led us all into a conversation over ID’s and being carded. The waiter thought I was at least 21, which I thought was really funny, you know, being 19 and all.

There you have my delicious plate of half eaten food. It was so good, I was so excited to have gotten out of having to eat in our dining room on campus. Thinking back to this meal so many months later I would probably rate it a 4/5 stars. Definitely a really good burger, not dry at all, and the fries were really good too! I also really enjoyed the root beer they had there as well.

Fitgers-AWASOE (1)

There’s a picture of me at the restaurant. Funny story about this picture actually, Dianna took it so that she could send it to some of the other people from the youth group and she only sent the caption “Lunch date” without attaching the picture. That definitely got some questions from the other leaders.

After we finished up at Fitger’s, we walked over to the Portland Malt Shoppe.

Dianna and I split a cookie dough malt and it was really good! The shop is now closed for the season but I know I’ll be bringing people there when it reopens next spring. I highly recommend it if you’re in the Duluth area.

After all of this food we headed down to the Lake Walk and just spent the afternoon talking and walking along Lake Superior.

I had such a good day that day. I’m so thankful to have people in my life like Dianna.

So if any of you are around Duluth definitely check out Fitgers and if you’re there in the spring/summer definitely check out the Portland Malt Shoppe!

Have a great day everyone.

I’ll talk to you all soon.

Wild by Nature

Have you guys ever heard of the website Goodreads?

If not, it’s this really awesome website where you can keep track of books you’ve read, books you want to read, quotes from books you like, all those kinds of things.

They also have this great section where you can sign up to win free books! I’ve entered probably 3o giveaways and won exactly two. It’s still fun though and totally worth it if you can actually get a book you’ve been eyeing for a while for free.

The first book that I won off of Goodreads is called Wild by Nature and it’s written by a woman named Sarah Marquis.

Processed with VSCOcam with hb1 preset

The book chronicles her journey as she walks from Siberia to Australia by herself. Sarah is an explorer from Switzerland and she is so cool!!! (Seriously, check out her Instagram, @explorer_sarahmarquis) According to her website she was elected Adventurer of 2013 in Europe and was the National Geographic Adventurer Nominee of 2014.

I got her book in the mail a few weeks ago and ended up reading it pretty quickly. I had read an article about her right after she finished her last expedition in Australia so I was really interested in picking up this book and learning more about Sarah and her adventures.

Processed with VSCOcam with hb1 preset

The day I finished her book I was home alone at my dad’s house on my first day of Thanksgiving break so I figured, why not have a book/breakfast photoshoot on the back porch?

Anyways, overall I was really entertained while reading this book and I thought it was really interesting. However, there were parts when I definitely feel like we needed backstory as to why things were happening the way they were or something would be said and I wouldn’t understand what had happened until 10 pages later when the background information was introduced. I feel like a lot of my “discomfort” while reading would probably be explained by the fact that Sarah is not a native English speaker.
I really would have liked more information into the background of what it takes to make a trip like this, I would’ve loved a chapter that was based completely around the logistics, all the gear, the plans, the timeframes, stuff like that.
I also feel like the maps at the beginning of each chapters, while helping to see the route she took, were kind of spoilers, they included information about what happened while she was walking when that information might not be shared for whole chapters. I felt like Sarah really talked about her journey really honestly and I appreciated it a lot, I just wish I could’ve known more about her experiences, I would’ve loved more detail.

Processed with VSCOcam with hb1 preset

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book (I gave it 4/5 stars), and while there were definitely parts of it that I would want to change to let me enjoy it even more, I would highly recommend this book to anyone who has ever dreamed of going on crazy hiking adventures.

November Favorites

Hey everyone! Here’s a compilation of all the things I enjoyed this past month…

Lilly Pulitzer Planner

As the semester is coming closer and close to an end I’ve been using my planner so much! It’s definitely been a big help with keeping me organized and making sure I get all of the assignments I have done on time. I really like my planner, although I will say I probably won’t be purchasing another one next year, there are plenty of other planners that I think will work just as well as this one! Right now, however, I really like this planner and am really glad I decided to pick it up.

New Hair!

I got my hair dyed blonde this month and I love it! I felt like I needed a change and decided that when I got my haircut I would get it colored too and the result is this.

York Peppermint Patties

I bought a bag of these shortly after I moved into school and let me tell you, I became obsessed with them from that point forward. This is actually the third bag I’ve had since moving here and I assure you, there will be many more! I tend to eat these when I’m doing homework and I’ll admit that at one point I ate half a bag without realizing it…

Fuzzy Socks

Now that the weather is getting cold, I wear warm socks almost every day. They keep my feet warm and they look really cute, not much else to say about them!

Processed with VSCOcam with p5 preset
Long Drives

I spent quite a bit of time in cars this past month and I have to say that when I’m not stressed out I really do enjoy long car rides when I can just jam out to music and enjoy myself.

Processed with VSCOcam with p5 preset
The Princess Bride

My last favorite for the month is movies! I really like doing work with movies on in the background and so I’ve gone through quite a few in November as I’ve had quite a bit of work to do.

This last month hasn’t been the greatest for me, but hopefully things will start looking up soon.

I hope you all have a great day.

Long Time No Blog

Hey everyone! Can’t believe I let myself neglect the blog for so long! I got so caught up in school that I haven’t posted anything in weeks! Definitely didn’t intend to let myself go this long without putting anything up here but I kept procrastinating and telling myself I would start posting again next week!

So I’m definitely going to get back into the swing of posting, I’m planning on prewriting quite a few posts just to have some things going up on my scheduled posting days even when I can’t actually take the time to write anything.

Right now I am currently sitting in the living room of my suite, working on my Deaf Culture midterm presentation and running through my to-do list for about the third time today. This is the first weekend in about a month that I have absolutely nothing planned going on so I fully intend to spend it getting ahead on all of my homework and catching up on all the blogging I have missed. (Who knows, maybe I’ll even be productive enough today that I can spend all day tomorrow reading!)

I hope you all have had a wonderful past few weeks and I can’t wait to get back into the swing of things.

Enjoy your weekend!

Rainy Day

Rainy day on campus. Had a very busy day and I completely forgot that I didn’t have anything scheduled to post for today!

I haven’t done much in the past few days other than a LOT of homework. I did go grocery shopping yesterday so I now have food that I can eat in my dorm.

I also have been listening to George Ezra almost constantly.  I think my favorite song of his is Blame It On Me but I can listen to the whole album straight through and not skip any song. He’s very talented and I highly recommend checking out his stuff.

Anyways, I still have homework left to do, so have a good night everyone! I’ll talk to you all on Sunday.
